Man Seriously Injured In Rutland Apartment Fire

RUTLAND (CBS) – A fast-moving fire tore through a Rutland apartment building Friday afternoon.

Before firefighters arrived, witnesses said they saw a man leaping from a second floor balcony that was engulfed in flames. The man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Firefighters rescued several other people from the Maple Street building, helping people out from all three floors.

Firefighters say alarms go off frequently in the building when people are cooking, so residents did not take this alarm seriously.

“There were flames shooting out of that second floor, I mean engulfed with flames,” a witness said. “It was bad, it was just flames beyond flames, it was scary.”

Approximately 50 people have been displaced due to the fire.
